In March 2026, the Government of Nuevo León reported that the state ranks first nationally in artificial intelligence adoption among companies with ten or more employees, at 12.6%.

The comparable national average is 8.0%.

Lower levels were also reported in Tamaulipas, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, and the State of Mexico.

The difference makes Nuevo León a useful case for observing the regional dimension of technology adoption.

But the comparison requires a fundamental clarification.

12.6% is not Nuevo León manufacturing’s adoption rate

The published figure corresponds to the set of companies with ten or more employees considered in the state analysis. It is not a rate exclusive to manufacturers.

This distinction avoids mixing two statistical universes.

The next level of analysis therefore needs to answer questions such as:

  • in which functions is AI used?;
  • what percentage of the workflow does it affect?;
  • what data does it need?;
  • which decisions still require human review?;
  • what results have been measured?;
  • what infrastructure and talent sustain the implementation?

Regional comparison should lead to better questions

Nuevo León’s leadership in this measurement does not demonstrate that its technology gap has been resolved.

12.6% also means that most companies in the observed universe still do not report adoption.

The value of the figure lies in identifying a difference and studying the conditions that accompany it.

For other manufacturing regions, the question should not be how to “copy” Nuevo León, but which elements of its ecosystem are transferable and which depend on its particular productive structure.

Geography can accelerate or slow adoption, but the final decision still depends on each company’s ability to turn a tool into a useful and governable process.
